Space is perhaps Ibiza’s best-known club (and the world’s if numerous industry and magazine polls are anything to go by). It is a venue worthy that status, having created many legends in its 20 year history.
Yet Space is another venue, which is almost unrecognisable from its original form. Once a concert hall, until one day an entrepreneur had the idea to turn it into a night venue, Space was born. It really took on a life of it’s own when DJs took a sound system into the car park to continue the party after the main club had shut. This soon started the phenomena of the now world famous Space Terrace. What many clubbers consider a typical Ibiza experience to be – open-air house music in the sunshine.
Sadly today the terrace is no more but in its place is a five room super club. The only remains of any outdoor areas are the el terreca and the sunrise terrace, which both now close at midnight.
The Sunday session remains the big draw despite the recent imposing of a later opening time of 4.30pm. In the past few years the club has moved away from a mainly after hours program in favour of a more nocturnal offering with huge nights every night of the week including Carl Cox on Tuesdays.
A trip to space is still an experience and should be on the wish list of any visitor to the island. Located near the water park in Play D’en Bossa Space still evokes an amazing clubbing experience even if some of its original Balearic charm has been lost.
