Radio One Weekend Ibiza 2010: The Build Up

Thursday 18th February 2010 - 10:20

Looking towards the Radio One Weekend in Ibiza 2010, NonStopIbiza looks at how the weekend has developed into the legendary status it now holds, as one of the biggest weekends in the Ibiza season.

Since 1995 the Radio One Ibiza weekend has been part of the stable August diet. Like all dietarians, whose main principle is to mislay and feel good, the weekend shares a similar ethos.

The impact of Radio One’s residency and decision to host a weekend will no doubt be entrenched in the memories of those present. Then again, you didn’t even need to be there, listening at home or on your journey to a domestic night, making plans for next summer’s holiday, transcended the excitement.

Radio One broadcasted at Privilege (called Ku at the time) in 1995 with club promoter Cream and has continued an affiliation. Cream and the Radio One Essential Mix moved across the road to record the famous Sasha set in Amnesia in 1996 and have consistently worked together ever since; presenting a taste of Ibiza on the airwaves. There has been the odd defection of course, Radio One at Pacha in 1999, Manumission in 2001/02 and 2005 for a huge anniversary event at Space.

Cafe Mambo has hosted live broadcasts during sunsets and one-off festivals that have occurred throughout the years. With all the logistical and production arrangements over a 15 year period, sometimes things don’t go as planned, for instance, the scheduling of Carl Cox at Space, I don’t see a problem there, was followed by Gilles Peterson. Then there was the year a certain Radio One presenter indulged in a bit too much Ibiza high life and didn’t make the live broadcast. Or the early days when chewing gum and Sellotape seems to hold the live set up together while Pete Tong spoke to the world on a Friday night.

It all adds to what is great about the relationship between Ibiza and Radio One. No matter how hard you plan, Ibiza is one of those places that refuses to go to plan, and always has something special in-store.

Overall, the Radio One Ibiza weekend brings with it a reputation to the peak season. Talk of Ibiza’s appeal waning isn’t mentioned in the arrivals lounge. This year’s dates are yet to be announced but the good money is 30th July – 1st August. So if you find yourself on the island, make sure you tune yourself in and attend one of the events that Pete Tong, Annie Mac et al. will be hosting.
