Ibiza Weddings: Starter Guide to Getting Married in Ibiza

Monday 8th February 2010 - 09:25

An Ibiza Wedding seems to be increasingly the choice of many couples when choosing a location for the big day. So what can an Ibiza Wedding offer that other locations can’t?
For those that enjoy the island regularly it’s easy to understand the choice, but for many others who may have never visited Ibiza, they can’t imagine what Ibiza has to offer when it comes to a wedding day.

The obvious attraction is the weather of course, but what many people forget is how beautiful the island of Ibiza itself is. It makes not only a fantastic setting for wedding but great photos too.

Before you get to your Wedding day in Ibiza however there is much to plan and work out. If you are based in another country the task can be quite daunting so here NonStopIbiza gives you five starter tips to make sure getting married in Ibiza is at trouble free as possible:

1. The Ceremony

Ibiza is a Catholic state. This makes it a bit more difficult if you aren’t Catholic and wanting to get officially married in Ibiza. The official process is a lengthy one and will involve contacting your local Catholic church who will guide you through the process. There are many Church of England alternatives on the island, but any wedding, including those in the churches, will be considered a blessing and the legal marriage should take place in your own country before you travel. There are a few Chaplins on the island who will assist you in your big day, but be warned these can be booked well in advance during the peak months.

You may prefer a spiritual ceremony of which hundreds take place each summer.

2. The Location

There are a select number of churches you can hold a Church of England marriage if not part of the Catholic faith. Increasingly popular is to hold the Ceremony outside the church and enjoy some of the wonderful sites and sounds Ibiza has to offer. From hotels, villas, cliff tops and beaches just about anything is possible with enough time (and money) to organise.

A restaurant or hotel can double as a reception venue and many can be exclusively hired for the day night at an extra cost. If you choose a villa then outside caterers can prepare the food on site.

3. Making it Happen

Of course a wedding isn’t just a ceremony it is a major event involving many people. Luckily Ibiza is well equipped with florists, hairdressers, make up artists and anything else you will need to help prepare you for your wedding day. For those non-Spanish speakers there is a large English community who are geared up around weddings. It’s not quite at scary as it sounds when embarking on your journey.

4. The Planning

Many people opt for a wedding planner in Ibiza. Having a planner can be a great assistance in taking the stress and strain out of the process. They will take of everything from the reception drinks to the photos. They will know everyone in Ibiza and speak Spanish and be equipped to get you the market rates.

There are various companies in Ibiza that can help with your planning. You may also opt to do this yourself. We recommend at least one trip over to meet the various people involved. With good internet research and requesting recommendations along the way, doing it yourself is quite possible.

5. The Weather

The reason of course many people chose Ibiza is for its weather. It’s never guaranteed but chances are you will have beautiful Mediterranean sunshine.

However do remember your guests may have to sit for the ceremony outside in the sunshine, in which case supplying water should be a priority. Also consider the length of any ceremony if in the mid day sun.

Post ceremony remember to consider the time and access to shade when serving food and reception drinks, it doesn’t take long for everyone to get hot under the collar.
