Ibiza Restaurant: KM5 - Ibiza's Oasis

Friday 28th August 2009 - 12:24

KM5 lies on an inconspicuous and abrupt exit just off the San Jose road; blink and you might miss it! And what a mistake that would be, as down the drive and up a tiny path leads you up into this restaurant and bar, which is something of a legendary nightspot in Ibiza, famous for its tranquil atmosphere.

You are first greeted by an open air lounge garden filled with low tables and plush white sofas which gently beckon you to recline and engross yourself in the glittering night sky above you. An eye-catching bar enclosed within a life size Orca somewhat overshadows the two other smaller, more classic bars. Very outlandish it might be but it’s all part of KM5’s considerable charm. Surrounding the garden are warmly lit Bedouin style tents with chaise longes, banks of lounge beds with cushions and sofas.

The restaurant serves Mediterranean inspired dishes of distinction to packed tables every night. The menu is modest and unfussy, steering clear of anything approaching nouveau or fusion cuisine and instead doing the simple things very, very successfully. The décor here continues the theme through with understated lighting and predominantly white styling, conveying an effortless air of elegance and sophistication.

Have a leisurely browse through the gallery where both local and international artists exhibit on a regular basis. There is also a boutique which stocks exclusive KM5 merchandise plus garments and accessories from local fashion designers. They also host frequent events, encompassing anything from fashion shows to full moon parties.

KM5 is so much more than the sum of it’s aesthetic, moreover it is the opulent atmosphere which really makes it tick and which it is most eulogized for. Even though it attracts a mostly upmarket clientele with local luminaries and international celebrities, somehow it never feels pretentious; you’ll find yourself falling under KM5’s bewitching spell, as all first time visitors do. Much like the island itself, you’ll never want to visit it just the once.

Getting there

KM5 is so called because it is 5 km along the San Jose road from Ibiza Town. If you are driving from Ibiza Town look for the road sign saying ‘5km’ and it should be on your left. Keep your eyes peeled for the KM5 sign.

Do I need to book?

It is highly advised to book ahead, especially for the restaurant but also if you want to guarantee yourself a nice spot to relax in the lounge areas.

Best time to go

KM5 is without a doubt best experienced at night, when the atmosphere can really work its magic.

Must try

Any of the Argentine beef dishes.
