Ibiza Restaurant: Jockey Club - Ibiza Beach Extraordinaire

Wednesday 9th September 2009 - 14:25

The Jockey Club sits regally in the middle of one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, Salinas, and is reached via a stroll through the shady pines of the Ses Salines nature reserve backing it. It has a comparatively unassuming exterior and decor, fitted almost entirely with richly coloured, weather-beaten wood, maintaining the sentiment of a rustic beach shack (albeit on a grand scale). It has a spacious feel, what with a large open plan terrace and a couple of smaller ones situated just off the main terrace.

The Jockey Club draws a jet-set clientele but the look and ambience are very casual; it’s not uncommon to see a billionaire nonchalantly lunching in his swim trunks or beautiful models start dancing around their table post-meal. It is another of those quintessential Ibizan establishments which has that certain ‘something’ about it, a tangible sense that you can’t quite put your finger on but just works.

Sat in front of the restaurant are sun loungers with optional umbrella and a fleet of dedicated beach waiters gratifying your every whim. You can choose to dine here on the beach reclining like a Roman Emperor or on the terrace above, sitting at hearty wooden tables with a cooling sea breeze and great views of Salinas.

Throughout the day DJs play a selection of mostly electronic music which sits perfectly in harmony with the setting. Would the Jockey Club be the same without the tailor made soundtrack? NonStop doubts it!

Another thing to note is that the Jockey Club has a predominantly very loyal staff base, with the majority of staff returning year after year. This must go some way to explaining the high quality of the service.

The menu consists for the most part of modern Mediterranean cuisine, so expect a sprinkling of fusion influences alongside the more traditional options. It’s a seafood lover’s Utopia, though there are meat and vegetarian options too. The prices are high, reflecting the wealthy customer base and the cornucopia of fresh, top quality seafood on offer; however there are cheaper alternatives too.

Getting there

You need to make your way towards Salinas beach in the south past the age old salt farms. Buses go there from Ibiza Town but the most flexible way is definitely by car. Salinas is signposted from the road between Ibiza Town and the airport.

Do I need to book?

With an establishment of this calibre it is always recommended, especially for tables of more than 2 and the sun loungers.

Best time to go

It’s open all year long but the best time is almost certainly the summer when you can dine in your swimwear and watch the beautiful people, all to a soothing musical soundtrack set to a delicious beach backdrop.

Must try

Any of the seafood.
