A beautiful winding drive through the countryside down to Cala Conta is a teaser of what eventually awaits you on arrival. Perched on a cliff with panoramic views overlooking the beach is Sunset Ashram, one of the locations on the island fortunate enough to get a clear view of the sunset each evening as it takes its nightly dip into the Med.
On entering there is a shop selling a selection of Indian influenced jewellry, clothing and other accessories. There are a series of seated areas with views out towards the sunset alongside a pathway which leads into the impressive circular shaped dining area. The restaurant has a sand covered floor with a domed ceiling and hanging lanterns which come into their own at night, swaying gently in the breeze and throwing their colours from side to side. From these seated areas you have easy access to the beaches and cliffs either side, from which you can also choose to watch the sunset (as many indeed do).
There are dj’s every night of the week, often complemented by live musicians ranging from guitarists to percussionists, playing a soundtrack which often changes abruptly to accomodate the imminent setting of the sun.
It’s a very liberal place, drawing a mixed crowd of hippies, locals and clued-up tourists. It’s also very family friendly and seems to have a lenient policy towards dogs too. The menu is as uncomplicated as the restaurant itself, consisting of Mediterranean and Indian inspired dishes. If you’re after an unpretentious and welcoming atmosphere to see in dusk, Sunset Ashram remains an excellent choice.
