Ibiza Resort: Santa Eulalia - Ibiza's Town's Quieter Cousin

Friday 10th July 2009 - 12:54

While San Antonio, Playa D’en Bossa and Ibiza Town are some of the usual destinations that come to mind when choosing a place to stay in Ibiza, it’s worth considering the resort of Santa Eulalia.

What makes Santa Eulalia unique is the fact it is as much a working Ibiza town as a holiday destination. Just north of Ibiza town and nestling along the coast, it’s around a 20 minutes cab ride from the airport. The shops here remain open all year round, where many other resorts shut up shop for the winter. You will spot the locals enjoying the daily pilgrimage to Calle San Jaime’s many cafes for fresh coffee and the bustle of the daily shopping.

The Area

This town, come holiday resort has a clean and quiet feel. The Marina has meant the resort attracts the boat owners and the lifestyle that goes with it. If you wander around Santa Eulalia you are most likely to spot older holidaymakers along with families, who enjoy the combination of a safe and contained beach area and nice restaurants away from the club crowd.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not a resort that should be discounted for younger groups or couples. The beach itself stretches across shallow waters and is covered in soft golden sands. It may get busy in high season, but then you have a range of more secluded beaches just a car ride away. It’s only a ten minute journey to Ibiza town and it provides easy access to some of the more out the way restaurants and beaches if you hire a car for your stay.

Accommodation

Santa Eulalia has plenty of accommodation for all budgets. Larger hotels include the Sol Ibiza, which is popular with British tourists and is busy right through the summer. Close by is the tropic garden, a family orientated hotel with a large pool area and regular activity. For those wanting a more exclusive choice, you should look at the Aguas hotel. A new development which is that aimed at the big spenders at around 400 euros a night but with the rooms to match.

For those at the opposite end of the scale there are plenty city centre hostels and small hotels offering shared accommodation with or without breakfast at very reasonable rates. Or private rental apartments that offer a competitive holiday stay if you prefer self-catering. Many of the islands Villas and apartments are also based in the hills around Santa Eulalia and if you would rather be away form the bustle this can be a great way to spend your time in Ibiza.

Restaurants and Nightlife

Most here come to enjoy the quieter side of Ibiza so there is a large selection of decent restaurants. The major ones tend to be gathered around the port area where you can admire the boats while tucking in to your paella or pasta or towards the main central street on Calle San Vicente that has rows of offerings. There is just about something for everyone with every nationality and taste catered for.

For those who just can’t resist the 24 hour party there is a nightclub called Gurana’s that is open 7 days a week during the season and will satisfy those wanting a late night drink and dance. It may not be Pacha or Amnesia but it also doesn’t cost you forty euros to enter, as it’s completely free all night. A few nice bars have emerged around the same area and though nothing to rival the port of Ibiza, you can easily enjoy a night out after a meal.
