Ibiza Resort: Formentera - Paradise is Not Far Away

Monday 1st June 2009 - 12:43

Formentera is the smallest of the Balearic Island, just three kilometres off the island of Ibiza. It is still one of the last unspoilt places in the entire Mediterranean benefiting from not having an airport like most tourist destinations.

But this basic nature isn’t the only reason so many people make the effort to visit or stay on the island of Formentera. It really is a picture paradise island. White sands and sky blue waters may be something you are more used to seeing in the Caribbean but they exist on Formentera! The popular swells in the summer months as tourists, particularly Spanish and Italian, arrive to enjoy the unspoilt beaches in the peak months of July and August.

The island itself is flat making it ideal for those wanting to hire a moped or bicycle to explore the island’s beaches. The waters are also clear so try snorkelling and you will be greeted by an array of colourful fish. It is also acceptable here to be nude on many of the islands beaches so don’t be shocked if you see naked people here, try it yourself you will be surprised what a liberation it is.

It all makes up the feeling of Formentera as a relaxed destination with a freethinking attitude. It was one of the original hippy hangouts of the sixties and that culture exists today with many running the range of more affordable eateries.

Getting to Formentera is relatively straightforward. The Ferry departs from Ibiza town just opposite Burger King around every thirty minutes. The Jet Ferry takes about 30 minutes or the traditional car ferry more in the region of an hour. Be sure to get an early start to make the most of it if you are a day-tripper on the island like many chose to do. Hotels can be expensive and fully booked in the peak months.

Once you have arrived moped or bicycle is often the chosen method of transport. However there are regular buses that depart around every thirty minutes in peak season, taxis or you can hire your own car. However you chose to move around Formentera, enjoy it’s beauty and emerge yourself if it’s laidback and simple atmosphere.
