Ibiza Closing Parties 09 - Top 5 Picks

Thursday 6th August 2009 - 22:04

The Ibiza closing parties have long been something of legend. It is a time when the island starts to wind down and say goodbye to another eventful season. Those that have immigrated to the island for the summer, start to pack their bags and feel the achievement of having made it to the closing party weeks. Each year the parties seem to get later as those in control wish to drag it out just that little bit longer. By mid September you can be sure that many of the main club nights have started to shut with the larger ones extending to the end of the month and even into October.

Ibiza is September is also a mellower place. The furious expectation of June and July has passed and the European tourist bloodbath that is August is out the way. The temperature has dropped slightly and with it does the pace. Many seasoned Ibiza visitors will swear this is the best time to visit and they have a point. One thing is for sure the atmosphere at the closing parties and the weeks during is one of jubilation, of having survived the summer and of one last dance before the music stops.

Nonstopibiza picks our top 5 recommendations for this year’s closing parties:

1. Space Closing Fiesta – Sunday 27th September

Space closing is one of, if not the biggest club night in the world. The party resembles more of a festival than a club. The club extends for 24 hours into the car park creating just about enough room to squeeze twenty thousand revellers in. Line ups are big, ticket prices are big and so are the queues, However no one can deny this is the closing party that is the benchmark, the closing party of the closing parties and something any clubber should experience.

2. Defected Closing Party – Saturday 26th September

Defected can sometimes be accused of being bland. Their brand of funky soulful house is easy on the ear and therefore easy with the general public. Where Cocoon’s techno may sometimes isolate, Defected’s percussive beats are inclusive. However it’s the closing party of a monumental season having been at the legendary Pacha every Saturday night for the first time. But as Defected depart with Bob Sinclair at the helm, Pacha won’t be shutting its doors but remaining open throughout the winter as it does every year.

3. Cocoon closing – Monday 28th September

Cocoon is like an Ibiza freight train with a popularity that seems unrelenting and a music policy that is constantly innovating. Head Honcho waves goodbye to ten years on the island and is joined by Ibiza favourite Loco Dice, who without his original playground DC10 open this year has fitted in perfectly at Cocoon. Add Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano in the Main Room and you have a recipe for an electric atmosphere. It takes place the day after Space so expect to see plenty of the same faces from the night before, just that little bit paler.

4. Ibiza Rocks – Tuesday 8th September

Ibiza rocks definitely feels like it has filled a void with the younger Ibiza followers this season. It has managed to get the right mixture between dance and indie music that has created a loyal following from visiting tourist and those on the island. Its big draw of course is the acts and the only promoters on the island really bringing a diverse selection of live music. This year they have introduced the likes of MGMT and Vampire Weekend as well as bring back favourites like Groove Armada and tonight’s headliners Klaxons. Expect a riotous reception for the London trio and a party that will last well into the night at Eden for the after party.

5. Carl Cox & Friends Closing Party – Tuesday 22nd September

Carl Cox is a DJ whose history speaks for itself, who can name a night after himself, yet not make it sound ridiculous. Possibly this is why the man has such adoration from legions of fans that turn out each week to hear an eclectic range of guests. Tonight should be extra special as it’s the return of Danny Tengalia who took a similar stance in 2008 of his own residency at Space every Thursday. The fact that he is back playing for Carl Cox should let you know that this night is the one in the Space program you should experience and this is the signal to start looking forward to next year.
