Benirras is perhaps most renowned for the spontaneous percussion-led musical shindigs every sunday at sunset where revelers are freely invited to join in. What initially started out many years ago as all-nighter hippy sunset parties has in the process become something of a tourist attraction and the ensuing crowds in peak season can make parking and leaving the beach a bit of a drama; however this is a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things, what with a beautiful beach aswell as an unforgettable visual and aural delight. Of course if you are not one much for crowds there are 6 other days in the week when you can enjoy this idyllic spot in more quietude.
The view out to sea holds a small piece of Ibicencan folklore (according to a local hippy, at least); the tiny island of rock standing directly in the distance is known as ‘El Rey’ (as it does indeed resemble a King in profile, sitting in his throne). The pieces of coastline to either side are known as ‘The Monkey’ and ‘The Sphinx’ respectively, owing to their resemblance to said creatures.
It’s a picturesque beach with clear waters and access up the cliffs either side for some lovely views. There are three restaurants just set back from the beach serving a range of food, with a shop and a juice bar for freshly made juices and smoothies.
Benirras lies all the way in the north past San Miquel after a lovely drive through the beautiful countryside of the north of Ibiza, where you get a sense of what the island might have looked like a few decades ago.
