A Catch up with We Love resident Ian Blevins

Tuesday 19th May 2009 - 09:40

Ian Blevins is steadily making a name for himself as a new batch of Ibiza DJs. Hundreds each year come to the island looking for DJ work and the dream of playing on a beach or becoming resident at one of the big clubs and you could say Ian is living that dream. Hailing from the north east, he made the journey to start spending the summers on the white isle some four years ago.

Today he is resident at the famous Sunday session We Love as well as the much talked about Azuli beach parties. While many DJs coming to the island come with a cd wallet packed with the latest big house tunes, Ian’s sound is more true to the roots of Ibiza; touching on deep house, disco and Balearic sounds. Why is this man not playing on one of the many beach somewhere on the island you ask? That may all about to change in 2009 if Ian gets his way.

When did you first visit Ibiza?

Probably around 2001/2002 with lads from college. We booked with the 18 - 30's lot but only got roped in for booze cruise. They seemed to stop knocking on our door when we told em to fuck off.

What made you want to spend the summer here?

About 2 days after my last Uni exam, I thought, why not. Had no ties, no upcoming graduate jobs etc. And I’ve been back every summer since.

Is it generally the same people you see each summer?

You do see a lot of the same people whether it’ll be working or on holiday, but generally there are a lot of fresh faces the beginning of June. Though a lot make the same mistake I did when I first came and spend all my savings in 3 days. Though I was fortunate to get work and stop out. A lot of those are on the next Easyjet flight home.

Why do you keep coming back?

Well, summer in Ibiza, sort of sells itself really. Its got everything really, clubs, nightlife, music etc but its also got a very chilled relaxed side with beautiful beaches and restaurants which a lot of people don’t touch on as much when they're here on holiday caining it. Just a great place to live basically.

Has it changed a lot in recent summers?

Yeah definitely, especially with the licensing laws last year and a lot of cracking down on clubs, dc10 and amnesia. I think it'll be an interesting year, especially with the whole recession and pound against the euro so low. Though last year we had heard reports on certain numbers were down but you'd still rock up to We Love or Cocoon and be cues round the block with people from all over the world still turning up.

You are resident as We Love at Space, what continues to makes the night popular after all this time?

I think that Sunday is a bit of an institution basically, you come on holiday and that’s penciled in your calendar to begin with. The amount of world class DJ's on constantly throughout many rooms spinning a very diverse music policy is something nothing else on the island has really. Just an honour and an absolute dream to be part of the whole thing and working alongside everyone who works there from top to bottom.

Best kept secret of the island?

Not so much of a secret but club sandwiches sausage rolls. Lo Cura in the town is a great little bar I play at as well just off the main street. Great music, great people and always lots of drink.

What are your plans for this summer?

Back out there end of May. Ill be spinning for We Love again over the course of the summer in a few of the different rooms again. The Azuli Secret Beach Parties which were a huge success last year and just working on a few other things at the minute which should unfold once I get off the plane which I’m itching to do.
